Facade-Lab
The Facade-Lab is Priedemann’s platform for research & development, creativity, collaboration and innovation. We bring together specialists from different industries such as manufacturing, engineering, architectural and other scientific fields to develop sustainable and cutting edge technologies in the facade sector up to market launch.
The Facade-Lab is Priedemann’s link between routine planning, research & development and knowledge transfer. Here we develop facade solutions that meet the complex challenges of the 21st century with resource-saving, forward-looking and intelligent answers.
Ever higher demands on the performance of the facade to provide protection against heat or cold: The rapid increase in construction activity in regions with extreme climatic conditions and the simultaneous scarcity of natural resources in particular calls for technically advanced solutions in the field of energy-efficient and sustainable construction.
Against this background, it is becoming increasingly important to consider and develop construction projects right from the outset with regard to their entire life cycle. Digital technologies like BIM (Building Information Modeling) make an essential contribution here.
The Facade-Lab is dedicated to these challenges with its broad interdisciplinary research and development work. The close connection with our planning and construction practice constantly creates new tasks. The solutions developed in the lab can thus be put directly into practice.
In addition to parametrics and digitization, current research topics include, for example, component-integrated photovoltaic thin-film modules, automated facade cleaning systems, prestressed glass supports, glazing with integrated LED conductor strands, exhaust air facades for reducing cooling and heating power, and control modules for complex facade functions.

Working with sample facades even during the planning phase underlines our technical curiosity as well as our responsibility to ensure feasibility. What will a design actually look like? How technically feasible is it? The Facade Lab provided the right infrastructure to do this. The same applies to the innovation-driven area of prototype development for innovative facade solutions.
Based on the data generated at Priedemann, we plan prototypes and sample facades in the Facade Lab. Architects and investors can experience their facade concept using haptics and on a scale of 1:1 and so can check and make any corrections to the design at an early stage. While in the “normal case” a sample facade is only created by the facade builder after the award of the contract, the later result can already be optimized in the design phase. This allows the tender to be formulated more precisely and leaves no room for interpretation thanks to the clear submission.
The sample facade thus allows increased planning and quality assurance. In addition, it can be used for early marketing of the building, for example by being presented to buyers or investors on the future building site. We also offer the possibility to build up sample facades on our own premises.
Specific units of relating to complex functions – for example in the innovation-driven areas of photovoltaics, solar thermal energy, solar cooling, vacuum glass or PCM (phase change material) – are built as prototypes in order to implement new developments, illustrate solutions or test the benefits and performance.

The haptic and optical impression of a facade changes noticeably with the scale in which it is presented. In order to convey the wide range of different facade solutions in an exciting and realistic way, we display over 50 facade elements in original size in our showroom.
In keeping with the motto “Experience Sustainable Technology”, the Facade Lab brings architects, developers, investors, contractors, manufacturers, builders and institutions together.
The most diverse range of facade materials and solutions as well as their possibilities for processing are presented in the 1:1 samples. The direct impression is more realistic here than with the usual small samples in your hand. The materials are shown on 1.35 m wide, floor-to-ceiling supporting elements linked together with connectors, joints and corner solutions. Further colors and surface qualities can be seen in the enclosed sample presentations. In addition, prototypes from the development work and sample facades of completed projects are presented in the showroom.
Experience Inspiration:
The Facade Lab is a specialist location for training courses, workshops and lectures for anything to do with the facade. The focus is on exchange of ideas and further training for the implementation of innovations.
The Facade-Lab offers colleagues, associations, institutions and industrial partners an inspiring place for further training and dialog on current fields of research and development. Topics include facade-integrated photovoltaic systems, self-reacting facade and sun protection systems as well as decentralized energy generation.
In addition, the areas of control and security technology as well as maintenance, operation and repair play an important role in the overall assessment of the building life cycle.
In addition to the topics on the system and product side, we are driving forward development on the planning side: This includes 3D modeling, parametric planning and the topics surrounding BIM (Building Information Modeling).
The Facade Lab Forum is a driver of debate and platform for dialogue and exchange. The aim is to implement sustainable research and development results more quickly into facade practice.
