Stock becomes future

Strandet assets have not only been talked about since the EU Taxonomy Regulation, the topic of refurbishment and conversion is not new. It is therefore worth showing good, already realized examples.

In 2015, the administration building of Helm AG was renovated in Hamburg, directly on the busy Nordkanalstraße, according to a design by Störmer Murphy and Partners in ongoing operation. Priedemann was responsible for the facade planning.

What is actually the advantage of the renovation? At Helm AG it was:

  • a well-established location
  • a functioning building concept
  • an intact shell, as a basic requirement

And the challenges?

  • The conversion should take place during ongoing operation
  • a cramped inner-city construction site situation
  • you never know what the old building has in store for surprises
  • an intact shell, as a basic requirement

With the commitment to the location, the further use of existing substance, the energetic and aesthetic enhancement of the building, many resources could be saved.
This was only possible through the cooperation of Helm AG employees, who were able to follow how their building gets a new dress from top to bottom during ongoing operations and through clever, tailor-made planning.

An external sunshade was deliberately omitted – the existing building had previously achieved full user acceptance even without one. In addition, the cost of maintenance and cleaning should not be increased.
The design responds to this requirement with an energetically effective sun protection glass whose dark appearance highlights the strip effect of the windows even more clearly. In cooperation with the large-format geometrically shaped parapet cladding made of high-quality coated aluminum, the old building was transferred into a new era.

The spectacular bridge construction also ensures long-term expansion and flexibility and thus strengthens the location with both buildings to the left and right of the Nordkanalstraße.
