BIM for facade design

BIM in this context means structuring facade geometry and project-specific information digitally so it can support defined design workflows. A digital or parametric facade model supports technical development, represents relationships between components and, depending on the appointment, provides views, sections or other model data. Exchanging information between project participants requires agreed formats, model structure, interfaces and responsibilities. Model content and level of information depend on the project requirements and Priedemann’s agreed scope.

Priedemann uses BIM to structure geometry, component relationships and agreed facade information within a digital model. The facade model can contain views and sections, parametric relationships, technical information and defined outputs for design and coordination.

Data formats, information requirements, level of development and responsibilities are established at the beginning of the project. Priedemann develops the facade model within the agreed scope and coordinates its exchange with the relevant discipline models.

Data exchange and model coordination

A BIM facade model is only useful when information can be exchanged reliably between the relevant discipline models. Data formats, communication standards and interfaces are therefore agreed at the beginning of the project. These agreements define which information can be received, developed and issued, and in what form. A clear model and information structure reduces misunderstandings between design disciplines and provides a reliable basis for subsequent digital coordination.
